Katmai National Park
Katmai National Park is a large, remote area on the Alaska Peninsula in the Aleutian chain of mountains. We took two flights to get there, a chartered Ravn Airlines trip to King Salmon and small float plane rides to Brooks Lodge. The park was created in 1918 to protect the Land of Ten Thousand Smokes, where a volcano sent smoke and pumice high into the air in 1912. Katmai is home to 2000 coastal brown bears, some of whom congregate at Brooks Falls to fish for salmon. While we were early for the salmon run, we did see bears at the viewing platform and on the trails.
